A Dream Come True!
"Wouldn't it be fun to own a Great Harvest some day?" As newlyweds, we walked to Great Harvest Bread Company on Jefferson Avenue, then owned by Jeff and Cindy Zehner, from our home on Woodlawn Avenue, and dreamed about the "what ifs". But home mortgages, a future family, and life stood in the way.
Fast-forward some 25 years, to May 2011. The kids are nearly grown, Tom retires after 30 years in corporate America, and Judy is ready for a new challenge after time as a full-time mom, freelance writer, and church/ministry volunteer. That's when we purchased the newly-vacated Great Harvest Bread Company franchise and re-opened our new bakery on Argonne Avenue. We're a block south from the original location, and across the street and just west from the Historic Train Station.
Kirkwood Great Harvest looks like no other Great Harvest out there. We operate under a “Freedom Franchise.” The “Freedom” part means that we get to run our business in a way that meets our community’s unique needs. The “Franchise” part gives us access to the recipes and processes that Great Harvest has continuously improved for over three decades.
Business is good, and we are blessed, thanks to our terrific customers and fantastic crew. In 2013, after being open for just over a year, we were awarded second place by our franchise in the category TOP SALES - NEW BAKERY. In 2014, the Kirkwood Des Peres Chamber of Commerce surprised us by awarding us BUSINESS PERSONS OF THE YEAR. And later in 2014, we received another sales growth award from the Great Harvest franchise.
Operating a successful small business in downtown Kirkwood has been everything we dreamed it would be, and more!
